چکیده

In a previous study, surface melting on the ~001! surface of caprolactam ~C6H11ON! was reported to proceed in a series of layering transitions, followed by a prewetting transition. We have reproduced the original results and shown that they can be better explained by the wetting of hydrated caprolactam ~with H2O molecules at bridging sites between the caprolactam dimers! on caprolactam, and that such hydration is most likely caused by H2O microinclusions in the crystals grown from solution. In agreement with this interpretation, we have also shown that the reported effects are absent on ‘‘dry’’ surfaces. @S0163-1829~97!03403-6#

Strain effects at solid surfaces near the melting point

We investigate the effects of strain on a crystal surface close to the bulk melting temperature Tm, where surface melting usually sets in. Strain lowers the bulk melting point, so that at a fixed temperature below but close to Tm the thickness of the quasi-liquid film is expected to grow with strain, irrespective of sign. In addition, a strain-induced solid surface free energy increase/decrease...

Prewetting transition on a weakly disordered substrate: evidence for a creeping film dynamics

– We present the first microscopic images of the prewetting transition of a liquid film on a solid surface. Pictures of the local coverage map of a helium film on a cesium metal surface are taken while the temperature is raised through the transition. The film edge is found to advance at constant temperature by successive avalanches in a creep motion with a macroscopic correlation length. The c...

Intermolecular interactions in poly(vinylidene fluoride) and ε- caprolactam mixtures

Mixtures of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and ε−caprolactam (CPL) have been investigated as models for possible cross-interactions between vinylidene fluoride and amide structural units, that might account for the very fine phase morphology previously observed in PVDF/polyamide 6 blends. Over the entire composition range, the PVDF/CPL mixtures are monophase above the PVDF melting temperature...

Thin-thick surface phase coexistence and boundary tension of the square-well fluid on a weak attractive surface.

Prewetting transition is studied for the square-well fluid of attractive-well diameter lambda(ff)sigma(ff)=1.5 in the presence of a homogeneous surface modeled by the square-well potential of attractive well from 0.8sigma(ff) to 1.8sigma(ff). We investigate surface phase coexistence of thin-thick film transition using grand-canonical transition matrix Monte Carlo (GC-TMMC) and histogram reweigh...

Investigation of Thermodynamic Properties of Heavy Metals from Melting and Critical Point Properties

A statistical mechanical based equation of state has been employed to calculate the liquid density of lead, mercury, bismuth and lead-bismuth and lead-lithium eutectic alloys. The equation is basically that of Song, Mason and Ihm [Ihm G, Song Y, Mason EA. J. Chem. Phys.1991; 94: 3839] which is modified by Ghatee and Boushehri. Three temperature dependent parameters are required to use this e...
